The Crisis
A Global Challenge
In Africa and Latin America, homicide rates far exceed global norms. A small group of high-risk young men in specific neighborhoods commits most of the violence.
Liberia
High-risk street youth are among the greatest public safety concerns and most pressing priorities for cities across Sub-Saharan Africa. In Monrovia, cycles of violence and limited opportunity trap young men in criminal behavior.
The Opportunity
Research shows that character skills, self-image, and values are malleable into adulthood. Even short, non-expert programs of cognitive behavioral therapy can effectively address impulsive and antisocial behaviors.
Our Approach
How STYL Works
A proven, cost-effective model combining therapy, financial support, and community reintegration.
Recruitment
STYL conducts an intake survey of the highest-risk youth ages 18β35 in high-risk communities, using rigorous risk criteria β extreme poverty, homelessness, underemployment, involvement in organized or petty crime, substance use, hostility, and social marginalization β and randomly selects youth to receive the program.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
8-week group CBT program covering self-regulation, future planning, and prosocial skills β plus individual counseling and role play.
Cash Transfers
Unconditional $300 grants enabling participants to relocate, open bank accounts, start businesses, or return to school.
Community Reintegration
Building non-criminal social identity through social reintegration activities and connection to local support networks.
βWhen one young person chooses a new path, the whole community grows stronger.β
